Writen imediately after 'Changes', 'The Way You Were' was officially the first Inertia Avenue song recorded. In fact, it was done so long ago that IA did not exist and it has me playing bass on it! As this is the most personal song I've ever written (or likely to write) I wanted to keep it with just me playing on it. The title of the album comes from the line in this song that goes 'A flower just lent but not given, to bud on earth and bloom in heaven' is deeply personal to me and for years I always knew that when or if ever I recorded an album that 'Just Lent, Not Given' would be the title.
